About the Tree as Symbol Series

Throughout the ages, in many cultures, The Tree has been a symbol of :
The Spiritual World; The Natural World; The Environment; the Psyche and
many individual nations, cities, towns and institutions have a tree as their symbol.

The Tree in this series most often represents an Individual Person in their world, but may also stand for Society as a Whole, or even our “world”.

As well as loving real trees, which have always played a major role in my life, I am very interested in the patterns occurring in nature such as the Branching Pattern, Waves, Fractals, Spirals etc and other universal patterns such as the Mandala.

Branching is found in many parts of the human body such as the circulatory and nervous systems and in geological forms such as waterways, as well as obviously in trees and other plants. It is also found in genealogical or other historical trees, statistical and web pathways, anywhere where there is “flow” of matter, energy or information.

This particular series started after a workshop at a conference in which people were invited to draw a picture of themselves, or their life, “as a tree”! I then continued with a series called The Tree as Spiritual Symbol. The early ones were painted on paper, or drawn with coloured pencils. Later, because it is “the same tree over and over again” (ie any individual!) I started doing them digitally. Now I just call it the Tree as Symbol, because I do not draw a line between Spirituality and just Life! There are more in the series than just the ones on this site.

The “trees” here are relevant to my journey. What does the Tree mean to you?
How would you draw yourself as a tree?

Below are the pictures of the Tree which are in the site so far. There are others still to be uploaded.

Clicking on them will go to larger, captioned, versions in a slideshow, but it unfortunately does not show the texts for them.
